Package: dpkg
Version: 1.4.0.8
When I run deselect and go to `[A]ccess' and then `mounted', I tell
which the Distribution top level is and then it shows a message like this:
/usr/lib/dpkg/methods/disk/setup:
line 8: 8531 Broken pipe
find "$mountpoint$2" -follow -name '*.deb' -print 2>/dev/null
8532 Done | head -1
8533 Done | grep . >/dev/null
Maybe this is a bash-2.00 problem?

Not only were there many other bug reports about this, and not only has
it almost certainly been fixed anyway, this one appears to have been
spuriously reassigned to dpkg-mountable. So I decided to close it, rather
than reassigning it for somebody else to close ...

Subject: CLosing this bug
Not only were there many other bug reports about this, and not only has
it almost certainly been fixed anyway, this one appears to have been
spuriously reassigned to dpkg-mountable. So I decided to close it,
rather than reassigning it for somebody else to close ...
IMHO, this is not the best way of dealing with a bug report.
If there are many other bug reports about this, it would have to be
*merged*, so that I will know when it is fixed. Bugs are not closed when
they have "almost certainly been fixed" but when they are *really* fixed.
I'm running unstable, and this bug is still *not* fixed.
I have traced the problem and I think that the error is in line 432
of /usr/lib/dpkg/methods/disk/setup. This file belongs to dpkg, so I'm
reassigning this bug to dpkg again.
Thanks.
Bug reopened, originator not changed.

Ian has seen fit to assign these bugs to bash. I don't disagree with
him that bash probably is misdesigned in this respect, though I think
his chances of getting bash to change are small indeed. I've
communicated the issues to Chet several times, but haven't received
much of a reply.
Ian, I'll keep the bugs open against bash, but just to be practical,
you ought to add a few lines to disk/setup to prevent these warning
lines.

Message #37 received at 10111@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Guy, are you still the bash maintainer ? This bug report relates to:
line 8: 8531 Broken pipe
find "$mountpoint$2" -follow -name '*.deb' -print 2>/dev/null
8532 Done | head -1
8533 Done | grep . >/dev/null
I still think this is a bug in bash. I've incorporated the workaround
from the NMU dpkg series into my tree, so it will stay, but the
workaround has undesirable side-effects so I'd like to get rid of it
some day.
Would you accept a patch to bash to fix the behaviour ? Ie, to not
produce a message to stderr if a non-final process in a pipe dies with
SIGPIPE ?
Ian.
