Subject: dpkg: old /usr/doc/copyright/*
Date: Sun, 17 Aug 1997 13:10:15 +0200
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.4.0.8

I just found an old file /usr/doc/copyright/nvi, probably from my last
installed nvi version sometime before November 1996, that was never
removed.

Would be nice if nvi.postinst would check for this file and remove it.

There are old copyright files from other packages too (for me: acs,
beav, elvis, gopher-client, joe, ntgclass, python), but I'm too lazy to
write this bug report for every package.

Perhaps dpkg's postinst could check for old files in /usr/doc/copyright
which don't belong to any package anymore and delete them all. This
would be a better solution than fix all the packages as often these
packages won't be installed anymore, but dpkg surely will.

Regards
	Herbert.

thanks

This is not a bug in dpkg, but a bug in a package (nvi in this case).
I don't feel it is the responsibility of dpkg to fix bugs in other
packages, so I'm setting this bug to fixed so iwj can close it.

Wichert.

Do you mean that nvi was never removed, or that it was and the
copyright/nvi file wasn't ? The latter would be (almost certainly) a
bug in dpkg, but I can't see how it could have come about.

Do you have any other information ? Did dpkg or /var/lib/dpkg suffer
any kind of other bizarre problems at any point between where nvi was
installed and removed ?

Ian.
