Package: dpkg
Version: 1.4.0.19
Severity: wishlist
I use dpkg with the ftp option to upgrade packages from a Debian
mirror site. I think I'm quite a typical Linux user in that I would
like to use the development versions of some packages, but not all of
them. For instance, I want to use stable versions of libc and bash,
but there are some packages -- application programs, mostly -- that I
could help develop by sending in bug reports, so I'd like to have the
newest (unstable) versions.
However, dpkg (or is it just dselect, or perhaps dpkg-ftp?) doesn't
let me do that easily. If I add unstable to the list of directories to
search for new packages, I get the unstable versions of all packages
offered to me by default. I can see two possible solutions:
1) Divide the packages by directory as well as by section, and
default to getting the newest version from the directory from
which the user got the last version, and initially prefer
stable to unstable. This way, we would have separator lines
like "Up-to-date Stable Extra packages in section misc".
2) For each package, show all available versions instead of just
the installed and latest available versions. I'm not sure how
to organize the packages in this case -- if the user has the
latest stable version for a package, should it go under
Up-to-date or Updated?
