Subject: Something is causing files to be compiled with >/dev/null 2>&1
Date: Sat, 8 Nov 1997 14:47:26 +0000
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.4.0.19

Seen in the output of `debian/rules build' in the dpkg 1.4.0.19 source
tree:

../libtool --mode=compile gcc -I../../../include -I../../.. -I../../../lib -I.. -I../include -I. -I../../../intl -I../intl -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DCOPYINGFILE=\"/usr/doc/dpkg/copyright\" -D_REENTRANT -D_GNU_SOURCE -O2 -Wall -Wno-implicit -Wwrite-strings -Wpointer-arith -Wimplicit -Wnested-externs -Wmissing-prototypes -Wstrict-prototypes -g -c ../../../lib/parsehelp.c
gcc -I../../../include -I../../.. -I../../../lib -I.. -I../include -I. -I../../../intl -I../intl -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DCOPYINGFILE=\"/usr/doc/dpkg/copyright\" -D_REENTRANT -D_GNU_SOURCE -O2 -Wall -Wno-implicit -Wwrite-strings -Wpointer-arith -Wimplicit -Wnested-externs -Wmissing-prototypes -Wstrict-prototypes -g -c -fPIC -DPIC ../../../lib/parsehelp.c
mv -f parsehelp.o parsehelp.lo

Note the >/dev/null 2>&1 when the file is compiled with different
compiler options. This could cause extremely confusing behaviour. At
the very least the output should be saved somewhere and printed if an
error (as opposed to a warning) occurs.

Ian.

Hi,

That /dev/null stuff no longer exists in the dpkg build system.
