Subject: dpkg-shlibdeps can't cope with statically linked binaries
Date: Sun, 16 Nov 1997 22:03:47 +0000 (GMT)
Package: dpkg-dev
Version: 1.4.0.8

When dpkg-shlibdeps is invoked on a statically linked executable it gives
a rather unhelpful message:

>dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: unknown output from ldd on `../src/f2c':
>`statically linked (ELF)'
>dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: ldd on `../src/f2c' gave nothing on standard
>output
>dpkg: --search needs at least one file name pattern argument

>Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling packages [*];
>Use dselect for user-friendly package management;
>Type dpkg -Dhelp for a list of dpkg debug flag values;
>Type dpkg --force-help for a list of forcing options;
>Type dpkg-deb --help for help about manipulating *.deb files;
>Type dpkg --licence for copyright licence and lack of warranty (GNU GPL)
>[*].

>Options marked [*] produce a lot of output - pipe it through `less' or
>`more' !
>dpkg-shlibdeps: failure: dpkg --search gave error exit status 2

This is because it can't cope with the output given by ldd on a statically
linked executable.
