Subject: dpkg-buildpackage does not include epochs in filenames
Date: Sat, 21 Feb 1998 23:34:33 +0100 (CET)
Package: dpkg-dev
Version: 1.4.0.20
Severity: wishlist

dpkg-buildpackage does not include epochs in filenames. With that, scripts
have to run `dpkg -I' (or a similar command) to get the exact version of a
.deb. This produces a lot of unnecessary overhead for scripts like
lintian.

Thanks,

Chris

dpkg-buildpackage is not going to create a file name with the epoch, since
that is what policy decides. You can use `dpkg-deb -f foo.deb version' as
an alternative to `dpkg -I' however, which is much faster.

If this satisfies the bug report, please close it.

As Ben Collins wrote in this bug back in 1999, dpkg-buildpackage is not
going to change behaviour. You can use dpkg-deb -f foo.deb version
which is faster than dpkg -I.

I'm closing this bug.

reassign 18482 debian-policy

Sorry for closing this bug a bit fast; I'm reassigning the bug to
policy so the policy process can decide whether this should be changed
or not.

Hi,

As far as I can tell, policy says nothing about the filename
of the resulting deb -- and this is not something that policy should
be doing, anyway. The long standing current practice is to not have
epochs in files names. If you want to see this changed, get dpkg
 changed, and change existing practice.

At this point, the argument that this makes life unnecessarily
hard for scripts does not hold much weight, since scripts have been
coping with this for most of the life of Debian.

	I am closing this report.
