Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.4.0.20
After selecting "Install", I got this error message:
internal error - no filename at -e line 12, <P> chunk 21.
installation script returned error exit status 1.
Press RETURN to continue.
Restarting dselect made no difference. An attempted
"strace -o logfile -ff dselect" got hung up. I would be glad
to help debug, but need some suggestions as to how.

Message #10 received at 18484@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
I should have included these details in my problem report:
I had started with a long-running Debian 1.3 system, had just run the
autoup script (version 0.21), and was using dselect to finish
upgrading to hamm. I was installing from a local mirror. The first
time I selected <install>, it failed while trying to install some
version of slang (some conflict, I think). I adjusted my selections
and tried installing again, only to get the "internal error" message.
I did not override any dependencies either time.

Message #21 received at 17897-done@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Hi people,
These bugs you have reported have all been fixed in the latest dpkg
package, version 1.6.9.
* #1399: dselect error handling not consistent
* #6007: dselect pbm.
Dselect now displays a message saying that the database is inaccessible or
that it is locked, asks for <enter>, and returns to the main menu
afterwards.
* #13187: --quiet|--verbose on update-alternatives don't do
anything.
Verbosity ($verbosemode) has been implemented in update-alternatives.
* #17877: dpkg: 'help' gets annoying after a while
There is a `--expert' command line option for dselect that turns off
automatic help messages.
* #17897: dpkg: dselect core dumped
* #18028: scanning package dir breaks install
* #18484: dpkg: "internal error" in dselect
* #18540: dpkg: unhelpful error message (invalid control file)
* #22649: dselect crashes
This was an old bug in the "disk" access method, and it seems to have been
fixed long ago.
* #21330: dpkg: link and use problems on non-snprintf platform
The snprintf usage in that file was fixed.
* #46747: dpkg: [hurd] start-stop-daemon
This Hurd patch was applied.
* #52919: dpkg: Dselect main menu title line incorrect (has %s,
printf problem?).
This %s was fixed.
(Wichert, dpkg maintainer, has told me I may close these bug reports instead
of him)
Thanks for reporting.
