Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: timezones
Version: 2.0.7pre1-1
When I issue date commands, or various other programs use dates, I get
something like:
Thu Feb 26 12:20:31 /etc/localtime 1998
On a hunch, I re-ran tzconfig... I forced it to change the timezone, then
changed it back to the correct value. Now it works. I don't know what went
wrong.

Did you --purge the timezone package? Look in the status file and see what
it says for Package: timezone (note, not timezones, which is the new
package name).
Thanks,

alexanderwohl ~$ dpkg -s timezone
Package `timezone' is not installed and no info is available.
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.
Hope this helps,
John

No doubt he did. And until you fix this bug, there will be countless
more bug reports. I still like the dpkg lobotomy (rm
/var/lib/dpkg/info/timezone.postrm). But maybe the timezone_99
package or reverting the name back to timezone is the better solution.
