Subject: dselect isn't `still trying'
Date: Wed, 17 Jun 1998 17:16:19 +0100 (BST)
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.4.0.22

when running dselect, and using nfs as the access method, after selecting
install, the following occured:

Unpacking replacement tetex-base ...
NFS server 193.63.255.4 not responding, still trying.

dselect then hangs, and is clearly not still trying (I have left it for 24
hours before, and nothing happens). I then try to exit with ^C, and run
install again, and this happens:

mount: 193.63.255.4:/public/pub/unix/Linux/debian already mounted or
/var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt busy
mount: according to mtab, 193.63.255.4:/public/pub/unix/Linux/debian is
already
mounted on /var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt

installation script returned error exit status 1.
Press RETURN to continue.

Then if I quit dselect, and run it again, on trying to remount the nfs
server (via the access option), I get:

What is the pathname on the NFS server of the filesystem with
the Debian files ? [/public/pub/unix/Linux/debian]
mount: 193.63.255.4:/public/pub/unix/Linux/debian already mounted or
/var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt busy
mount: according to mtab, 193.63.255.4:/public/pub/unix/Linux/debian is
already
mounted on /var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt
Unable to mount NFS filesystem 193.63.255.4:/public/pub/unix/Linux/debian.

Then I try to unmount the mounted filesystem:

root@pick:~# mount
/dev/hda1 on / type ext2 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
nymph.csi.cam.ac.uk:/linux on /mnt type nfs (rw,addr=131.111.10.245)
193.63.255.4:/public/pub/unix/Linux/debian on /var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt
type nfs (ro,nosuid,nodev,addr=193.63.255.4)
root@pick:~# umount /var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt/
umount: /var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt: device is busy

Even killing the dpkg process doesn't unmount the device:
root@pick:~# ps
  PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND
  202 8 SW 0:00 (getty)
  203 9 SW 0:00 (getty)
  204 10 SW 0:00 (getty)
  205 11 SW 0:00 (getty)
21748 2 S 0:25 ssh cus.cam.ac.uk
21918 5 SW 0:00 (sash)
21970 5 S 0:00 bash
25754 5 S 0:12 (dpkg-deb)
25818 6 S 0:00 sash
25819 6 S 0:00 bash
25849 5 R 0:00 ps
root@pick:~# kill 25754
root@pick:~# umount /var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt/
umount: /var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt: device is busy
root@pick:~# pwd
/root

The only solution is to kill -9 the dpkg process:

root@pick:~# kill -9 25754
root@pick:~# umount /var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt/

Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Yours,

Matthew

That's not dpkg, it's a kernel message. dpkg doesn't even know this
problem is occuring.

In that case:

a) should the bug be transferred to another package (can you do this)
b) Is dpkg's refusal to unmount cleanly a bug?

Yours,

Matthew

It's an NFS bug ; perhaps reassign to nfs-client, or the kernel ?

But this is a problem by design in NFS. dpkg can't umount, since there's a
process (itself) stuck waiting for a NFS reply. Problem in (probably) the
Linux implementation, such a process is next to unkillable, which makes
umounting the partition a bit hard.

Will close this bug in 2 weeks.

Kernel thing indeed. The fix is to use the intr flag for NFS mounts so
you can interrupt it.

Lets close it now :)
