This bug was about the failure of dselect's select mode to draw a color
bar for the entire length of the last line. It is easily reproduced
with dpkg 1.4.0.17, ncurses 1.9.9e-1, and any version of ncurses-base.
On the linux console, the blue line dosen't reach across the screen,
only as far as the longest text printed there. On a b&w xterm, the
reverse video exhibits the same problem.

This is actually a problem in dselect, not ncurses. Ncurses considers
attributes like color and reverse video to be cell-by-cell features; if
you want to have it extend across the screen, dselect must draw spaces
to pad out the remaning width.

This problem has become much more severe with the new (color) xterm
terminfo entry that ncurses-base provides.

The blue bar at the bottom of the selection screen is still broken,
but at least it is small and it only grows. What is much worse is
that the entire description section is now shown in white text on a
black background, but all the surrounding whitespace is just that --
white. This result is a large, jagged edged, black blob of text
dancing about in the lower half of the xterm as you scroll.

The package section (the upper half of the xterm) is a solid color
even where its lines do not go all the way across, so the description
section should be fixable.

The current behavior is nauseating, not just aesthetically, by
physiologically as well. It is likely capable of inducing epileptic
seizures in those susceptible. I can see the headlines now:

Electronic Warfare: From Japanese Cartoons to Dselect

(At least we would get some press.)

Hello,

Report: 2863
Status: Open, normal.
Analyse: ncurses problems in a xterm.
Explanation: Reversed text does not reverse surrounding area.
Strategy:
When printing reversed text, for example in the help screen or the
description, make sure that the whole area is filled with reversed
 spaces, too.
[btw, I couldn't reproduce problems with the blue status bar]
Version: dpkg_1.4.1.1, libncurses4_4.2-3

Thank you,
Marcus
