Subject: xbase installation segfaults / Netscape bus error
Date: 27 Nov 1998 20:10:13 +0100
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Severity: grave
Package: xbase
Version: 3.3.2.3a-8.1
Version: 3.3.2.3a-7
Version: 3.3.2.3a-1

Let's add another bug report to this impressive list :-(
This bug seems to be related to previous reports #29782, #29186,
#29172, #28714.

xbase segfaults on installation.

SHORT HISTORY

When upgrading through dselect, something went wrong. First symptom
was Netscape refusing to start, reporting a bus error because of
invalid locale settings.

On investigation, several essential packages required
reinstallation. I reinstalled dpkg, findutils and shellutils. And,
just to make sure, also libc6.

By now, my whole X installation is down. Not very handy for a web
developer....

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

xbase will not install. I'm using kernel 2.0.32 (I know, it's old) and
libc-2.0.7.so

I've tried installing in combination with xlib6g_3.3.2.3a-1 as wel as
xlib6g_3.3.2.3a-7. In both cases I've tried installs of xbase
3.3.2.3a-1, 3.3.2.3a-7 and 3.3.2.3a-8.1. Everything ends in a
Segmentation fault, reports are appended below, first appendix in
combination with xlib6g_3.3.2.3a-1, the second with xlib6g_3.3.2.3a-7.

As an additional bug report, the xbase install reports presence of
/etc/X11/Xresources and presents a choice (Y/I/N/O/Z) even if this
file does not exist, see appendix 2.

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
This segfaulting business is not something I have seen before with the X
packages, and thanks to the debacle with the "Great Reorganization" of the
X packages, I think I've seen most of the failure modes.

I suspect a problem with dpkg, or something deeply and subtly awry on your
system.

At this point the best thing to start using dpkg with the --debug flag.
Here is the output of dpkg --debug=help:

dpkg debugging option, --debug=<octal> or -D<octal>:

 number ref. in source description
1 general Generally helpful progress information
2 scripts Invocation and status of maintainer scripts
10 eachfile Output for each file processed
100 eachfiledetail Lots of output for each file processed
20 conff Output for each configuration file
200 conffdetail Lots of output for each configuration file
     40 depcon Dependencies and conflicts
400 depcondetail Lots of dependencies/conflicts output
1000 veryverbose Lots of drivel about eg the dpkg/info directory
2000 stupidlyverbose Insane amounts of drivel

Debugging options are be mixed using bitwise-or.
Note that the meanings and values are subject to change.

These debugging values work just like file modes. I do not know your level
of expertise, but for a problem this strange you might consider getting
some personalized assistance from the Debian IRC channel. Grab an IRC
client (like ircii or bitchx), connect to the irc.debian.org server, and
join channel #debian. For instance, I use the following command to start
the IRC client:

bitchx mccaffrey.linpeople.org

(That's one of several hosts that irc.debian.org redirects you to; it's a
server I find consistently works well for me; your mileage may vary.)

At the IRC prompt I then issue the following commands:

/nick Overfiend
/join #debian

The above two commands set by IRC handle, or nickname (you won't want to
use Overfiend, the nick is registered and you'll get kicked off), and join
the Debian discussion channel.

Tell them Overfiend sent you. :)

Gack. That sounds like an old error. Please make sure you're using the
actual released 3.3.2.3a-8 .debs. The above sounds like a problem in -7
and earlier, and in a couple of the -8 test builds.

In the meantime a quick workaround is just to edit /etc/X11/Xserver and put
the name of the X server you want to use on the first line. For instance:

/usr/bin/X11/XF86_SVGA

Hopefully soon I'll have a new test build available, which will be
specially version numbered to make life easier on auto upgraders and
eliminate the "*which* version of -8 are you using? check the date in the
changelog" issues. It will be called 3.3.2.3a-8pre9v1, and will not be
uploaded to the archive. It will be available at
http://master.debian.org/~branden/xfree86/.

When I'm ready to do another real release, the version number will
naturally be 3.3.2.3a-9.

NOTE: The xbase package has been split into several new packages, including twm,
xbase-clients, xdm, xfs, xmodmap, and xterm (among others). It may be
necessary to select some or all of these packages (with dselect, for instance)
before all the parts of the old xbase package that you require are present. It
is also suggested that, if prompted to overwrite or keep your current version of
the /etc/X11/Xsession file, you answer Y to accept the pre-packaged version, or
your default X resources may stop working. More information on these issues may
be found in the /usr/doc/xbase/README.Debian file.

Description: local clients and configuration required by X
This package contains the basic X11R6.3 distribution. It includes the basic
clients and configuration files. It does not provide a server; servers
for several different video cards are included in the xserver packages.
This package also does not include the shared libraries; for these you must
install the xlib6g package. When a server, the shared libraries, and some
fonts for X are installed along with this package, a functional X Window
System installation is present. For a more complete installation you can
 install the xcontrib package.

reassign 30090 dpkg
thanks

It's been brought to my attention that dpkg shouldn't be coredumping, no
matter how stupid an error a package maintainer may have made. So I'm
tossing this hot (grave) potato into Ian's lap.

This may or may not be related to the circular symlink madness, a bug I
already filed against dpkg.

If saying "circular symlink madness" you refere to the fact that
programs
segfault when dealing with circular symlinks (chains of symplinks
pointing
back to themself), then it is worth to have a look to bug#20426, in
which
I found the lines of glibc where the bug is.

I don't have a fix for it (it's a bug in the design of the function).
That function should be rewritten or patched adding a counter to stop
following the symlinks.

fab

Urp. This looks a lot like dpkg bug #30090.

Just for grins, I note you're in .se. Do you happen to have the LANG or
any of the LC_* variables set? If so, try unsetting them and PLEASE let
me know if that fixes the problem or changes nothing.

I suspect it won't, though. The next thing to do is try the --debug option
to dpkg, and/or use strace to find out exactly where this problem is
occuring.

If we can track down this awful bug, maybe Ian Jackson (dpkg author) can
fix it.

That solved the problem... I had LC_TYPE=iso_8859_1 and
LC_ALL=sv_SE.ISO8859-1 set, and when I unset those, the install script
didn't complain.

I can verify this.

I just had dpkg die when installing grub; strace showed that it dies
shortly after not being abe to rmdir /usr/doc/grub, IIRC; it called some
I18N routines, then died. Unsetting LANG (was de_DE) removed the coredump.

It's definitely an I18N bug.
