Package: dpkg
Version: 1.2.9elf

Not too sure if this is a bug, but a the very least it's weird.

I have version 5.003-1 of perl-* installed.

Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err:
uppercase=bad)
||/ Name            Version        Description
+++-===============-==============-============================================
ii perl 5.003-1 Larry Wall's Practical Extracting and Report
ii perl-debug 5.003-1 Allow debugging perl scripts (and perl).
ii perl-suid 5.003-1 Runs setuid perl scripts.

The thing is, I fetched them from Incoming and installed them by hand
because they weren't in rex.

Now when I run dselect on master (using dpkg-ftp on the tree 'unstable
non-free contrib'), the conflict resolution screen pops up with:

 *** Imp devel perl Larry Wall's Practical Extracting and Report Lang
 *** Std devel perl-suid Runs setuid perl scripts.
 *** Opt devel perl-debug Allow debugging perl scripts (and perl).

and dselect complains that

perl-suid depends on perl (= 5.003-1)
perl-debug depends on perl (= 5.003-1)

(Btw, this kind of 'conflict report' would be much more readable if it had
a line saying what the version of 'perl' was.)

To me, that looks like a bug. If I have perl 5.003-1 installed and dselect
doesn't downgrade packages, then it shouldn't complain.

Here are the relevant lines from the 'Select' screen of dselect:

EIOM Pri Section Package Inst.ver Avail.ver Description
 *** Imp devel perl 5.003-1 5.002-10 Larry Wall's Practical Ex
 *** Std devel perl-suid 5.003-1 5.002-10 Runs setuid perl scripts.
 *** Imp devel perl 5.003-1 5.002-10 Larry Wall's Practical Ex

PS About the new bug-reporting system, it'd be nice to have an address
'getmybugs@bugs.debian.org' (or something like that) that sends back (in
digest format) all the outstanding bugs whose maintainer name matches that
of the person sending the mail.

I think that this is fixed in 1.2.11; could you try it and see ?

Thanks,
Ian.
