Subject: shellutils: su no longer works
Date: Wed, 2 Jun 1999 00:26:39 -0700 (PDT)
Package: shellutils
Version: 1.16-6.4
Severity: grave

When I upgraded from 1.16-6.3 to -6.4 this evening, su stopped working:

tweet:~> su -
Password:
su: incorrect password
tweet:~>

I did indeed type in the correct password. Luckily, 1.16-6.3 was in
slink, so I grabbed that .deb, installed it, and now everything works
again. When I reinstalled 1.16-6.4, the bug reappeared.

I checked to see if the libc6 upgrade that I also did tonight (from
2.1.1-9 to 2.1.1-10) had any effect.  As far as I could tell, it didn't;
su is broken with either. I also checked the same for libpam-modules,
libpam-pwdb, libpam-runtime, libpam-cracklib, and libpam0g on a whim, and
couldn't see any difference there, either.

I have set the severity of this bug to grave, as solving (never mind
finding) the problem for me involved locating and obtaining a monitor to
attach to the machine, which normally runs headless. I couldn't even take
a good look at the problem from my regular terminal because, well, I
couldn't su and become root. It could have been a very large problem had
I not been fortunate enough to get console access so quickly.

The required fix is to have the dh_fixperms command in debian rules
read:

  dh_fixperms -Xbin/su

This requires a reasonably up-to-date debhelper (>= 1.2.44).

This bug has been fixed in NMU of shellutils version 1.16-6.5, which
is now installed. Thank you all for reporting this very significant
problem.
