 Original gs can not handle kanji font PS, and there has been
the JP patch widely used in Japan.

Currently, most recent one (JP-patch) can be donwload from

And also, there are two bugfix patch.

Please merge these patch into gs, or we Japanese users can not
use gs at all for viewing the PS file including Japanese font.

named "ghostscript" these two days.

I have splitted the diff file included in gs510j49.tar.bz2, and do screening
splitted-patches into used, modified and not used.

I have made the result of this screening in the form of the addition for
the current gs_5.10-2, kanji-patch.tgz.

You can test it by tar -xvzf kanji-patch.tgz in the gs-5.10 directory.
That tar file contains the directories and files under ./contrib/kanji/

There is diff.debian.rules in ./contrib/kanji/, which is the required modification
for debian/rules to use this enhancement.

I will upload this kanji-patch.tgz into http://www.debian.org/~sano/
 (i.e. my $HOME/public_html), but I have not done such a thing yet,
so I will also upload the experimental package which includes this modification
(gs_5.10-2.0.vflib.2) into experimental-jp on Debian JP as a kind of insurance.

GNU Ghostscript is so much important for users who use Debian on document writing.
It is very pity that Debian's gs (and of course, upstream's gs) has lack of support 
for Japanese characters. Some part of this status comes from us, Japanese people,
ourself, but I wish to improve this situation.

So please help us to implement Japanese support in gs package of Debian.

I have not done about modification to use some printer drivers included in
original gs510j49 for many popular printers in Japan. It is left as TODOs.
I hope that I can work at this before the release date, but I have not promise
about it. So I hope anyone in Debian JP (or elsewhere) will work at this point
using your gs package and my experimental package as a base for modification.

I have uploaded my source NMU of gs as gs_5.10-2.0.vflib.2 (which I think NMU-ready)
to experimental-jp (http://www.debian.or.jp/debian-jp/project-jp/experimental/).

This package is lintian-free now, and ready to FHS transition.

In this arrangement, I added kanji-support, jpdrivers-support, and jpconflict-support
to debian/rules.

kanji-support is required for Japanese Language support for gs.
This is defined as default.

jpdrivers-support is required for some popular printers in Japan
to use them via gs. This is defined as default.

jpconflict-support is required for other popular printers in Japan 
to use them via gs. Unfortunately, they have conflict with other drivers
in current gs package. so this is not defined as default.

In order to use jpconflict-support, one should undefine hp8xx-support.

jpdrivers-support requires kanji-support defined, and jpconflict-support
requires jpdrivers-support defined.

so one can define kanji-support without jpdrivers-support defined, but
can not in vice-versa.

I have not uploaded it into unstable of Debian, because I think that 
I should consult you Marco, before doing it.

I will wait for your come back from vacation (Nov. 3 ?).
If you can, please merge the diffs for my 5.10-2.0.vflib.2.
If you can not, then please let me do the source NMU for gs.

Please check that you have downloaded 5.10-2.0.vflib.2, not vflib.1.
vflib.1 is not lintian-free and FHS-ready. vflib.2 is ready for upload.

And there are some documents and copyright notice in the source for 
kanji support and jpdriver support to be fixed. I am now working to
solve them. I think they are not so serious and not release critical
problem, but I think that I should inform you about them.

also bug#49725 is on the same subject), which is related to the
Japanese font support: i'll try to fix it as soon as possible; in the
meantime, if you have any hints, please send them to me.

The problem is that the japanese fonts seem to be necessary in the
startup phase (even by giving simply gs): this is not acceptable, as i
cannot ask to all the users to install japanese fonts.

I also do not understand why the two Nimbus fonts are loaded: this
should not happen (once again, gs does not depend on gsfonts, as
postscript is useable also without fonts). In fact, if i install
versions of gs without japanese support, these fonts are not loaded
automatically, but only on demand...

Any hint on where to look for changing this behavior is really welcome.

Clearly, i'd prefer not to remove the kanji support. However, if we
are not able to find a good fix in a pair of days, i'll upload a new
version with kanji-support disabled, as a temporary patch.

In the meantime, i have given a look to the problem: it seems to
reside in file /usr/lib/ghostscrfipt/5.10/kanji/kconfig.ps, that, if i
understand correctly, describes the kanji fonts that are available on
the sistem. In particular, the instructions

  /Ryumin-Light          4300000 (min)   VFlibkanji
  /GothicBBB-Medium      4300200 (goth)  VFlibkanji

try to load the fonts and complain if they are not present on the
system.  A possibility would be to move this file to /etc/ and to
modify it dynamically, when new kanji fonts are added to the system.
Another possibility is to manage kanji fonts as ordinary fonts are
handled, i.e., by looking at the font files only when the fonts are
used.

Any hint is welcome!

With this fixes,

 * if LANG=ja*, then NOKANJI is unset, so kanji font will be loaded
 * if -dKANJI is specified, even if LANG is not ja*, kanji font will be loaded
 * if -dNOKANJI is specified, even if LANG is ja*, kanji font will not be 
   loaded
 * otherwise, kanji font will not be loaded

So, to use kanji fonts, user should specify
 - set LANG environment variable to ja (or ja_JP, ja_JP.eucJP, ...)
or
 - gs -dKANJI

If you don't need kanji fonts,
 - *DON'T* set LANG to ja (or ja_JP, ja_JP.eucJP, ...)
or
 - gs -dNOKANJI (even if LANG=ja*, this is default behavior by Japanese patch)

I have checked by removing two Japanese fonts used by vflib:
  asiya24-vfont and watanabe-vfont.

Using "-DNOKANJI" option, "gs -DNOKANJI snowflak.ps" can display
the snowflake picture. this snowflak.ps is provided with gs as
/usr/share/doc/gs/examples/snowflak.ps.gz.

I have removed gsfonts, and gsfonts-x11, but "gs -DNOKANJI snowflak.ps"
can still display on X and svga (when invoking with sudo, on svga)

"gs -DNOKANJI golfer.ps" can also display the figure of golfer,
without gsfonts and gsfonts-x11, as well as two Japanese vfonts.

escher.ps requires Courier, so gsfonts must be installed to display
this psfile.

When installing gsfonts, "gs -DNOKANJI escher.ps" can display
beautiful image on X and svga (svga when invoking with sudo, of course)

So, What should be done is, to set "-DNOKANJI" as default setting.

I have tried to modify /usr/lib/ghostscript/5.10/gs_init.ps:

with this change, "gs snowflake.ps" and "gs golfer.ps" can display
pictures evenif not installed gsfonts.

and "gs escher.ps" can display picture when gsfonts are installed,
of course while two Japanese vfonts are not installed.

And "gs -DKANJI" can display Japanese postscript files when these
two vfonts package (asiya24- and watanave-).

Great! It works perfectly well! I am compiling and uploading a new
version of gs that uses it (i have just slightly changet the patch, so
that if both KANJI and NOKANJI are defined, NOKANJI has precedence.

i have tested Ukai's patch on my computer and, since all seemed to work
well and new users complained about gs not working, i have uploaded a new
version of gs with that patch.

Since your new patch seems not so urgent, i am not going to do a new
upload just for the (i would like to fix some other small problems and do
with a new upload in a pair of weeks).

Sorry for that problem, and thank you for your work.

Without that patch, gs can not be build when jpconflict=1 is enabled in
debian/rules (and hp8xx-support disabled). 
It may be not so urgent, but may required for potato release.
Of course, a pair of weeks will be enough before plannd freeze, I think.

I found that a document file in jpdrivers of gs has copyright problem.
It is "contrib/jpdrivers/src/gdevmjc-0.8no2/OLD-DOC/cpem.doc",
which has non commercial license.

The related code does not have any problem, only that document has.

Please remove that cpem.doc, it is only included for historical 
reference of a color adjust algorithm used in gdevmjc, and maybe
not required to use and develop the code itself.
