I'm getting an error report from ldd identical to the one reported by
Brendan Black as Debian bug #42944.

I have two computers - both running Linux 2.2.14 with ldd 2.1.3, one
is a 450MHz AMD K6, the other is a 266MHz AMD K6-2

If I compile my program on the 266MHz machine, the resulting
executable runs flawlessly on both boxes.

If I compile on the 450MHz machine, it runs OK on that box - but
if I try to run it on the 266MHz box - or run ldd to display the
library dependancies, I get bug #42944.

  % ldd tuxkart
  BUG IN DYNAMIC LINKER ld.so: dl-version.c: 210: _dl_check_map_versions:
  Assertion `needed != ((void *)0)' failed!                                               

While asking around about this, I encountered two other people who have
seen this problem at various times and under various versions of ldd.

I am getting this same error as the other two people listed under bug report
#42944
I have debian potato installed, with this setup..
2.2.14 Kernel
Xfree86 4.0
glibc62.1
ldd (and) ld.so 1.9.11 (thats what is reported when i type ldd -V)
This is running on a Celeron 333MHz w/ 128MB RAM/ etc.
ive compiled a game called tuxracer which compiles with no errors and i get
the EXACT same/identical error with Wine (not sure what version, but it did
compile without errors).

  This nasty linker bug:

...seems to have occured in gazillions of programs on loads of Linux
distro's - heck there is even a fortune cookie about it!

I spent an evening researching it and finally tracked down this
bug report:

The detail of the explanation kinda escapes me - but essentially, it
seems to boil down to a problem with linking to libraries that in turn
require the pthreads library.

This fits exactly with my symptoms reported earlier.

On one machine, I linked with Mesa - which in turn links with pthreads.
On the other machine, I linked with nVidia's OpenGL for Linux - which
(presumably) does not.

Changing my Makefile to force a link to -lpthread fixed the problem
completely.
