Subject: smail: postinst leaves MTA broken if xinetd is in use
Date: Fri, 29 Oct 1999 10:46:17 +0930 (CST)
Package: smail
Version: 3.2.0.102-2
Severity: important

ObSeverity: This should be quite easy to fix but I do consider it release
            critical.

If you really must call kill -HUP `pidof inetd` in the postinst at least
check first that it is running. The existance of inetd.conf is NOT enough
to know this.

For users of xinetd (and other inetd alikes) this call to kill will fail
(`pidof inetd` == "") and prevent configuration of smail on upgrade,
leaving the system with a broken MTA.

Hi,

i've attached a new postinst that should correct the problem (#48614)
It does use /etc/init/inetd reload & /etc/init.d/xinetd reload.

You only need to depend on the right netbase (>= 3.16-1) (to be sure that
/etc/init.d/inetd does exist) ...

Christian, can you do a NMU with this postinst (you've done the last
upload already) ? I've tried to NMU it myself but the build does fail
(there's no smail binary installed in debian/tmp/usr/sbin) ...

Cheers,

Oh, thanks for fixing this.

Well, should be no problem.

I can do so, but first I will contact Soenke in IRC to check if it's
okay for him. Then I will NMU the package.

Ciao

I won't make a NMU as Soenke currenlty updates his build-system and then
will build new smail-debs himself. So we only need to wait some time to
get a fixed package.
