Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.4.0.5.
I just installed Debian 1.2 using 'dselect' on a copy of the Debian
distribution tree on a mounted partition of my hard drive. I had
problems with some packages, because although 'dselect' recognises
dependencies between packages, it does not install and configure
packages that others depend on before these are installed. For
example, I tried to install the package 'dwww', and dselect told me to
install a WWW server and a browser as well. I chose 'apache' as WWW
server. When the installation got to 'dwww' it reported that 'apache'
had not been installed (or at least not configured) and did not
install properly. I solved the problem by removing both packages, then
installing just 'apache' and then 'dwww', but I think 'dselect' should
do these things by itself.
I run Debian 1.2 with a custom kernel version 2.0.27 and libc version
5.4.13.

That might be a problem with dwww, however. dwww is not very good
at interacting with apache, since I never did get apache to install.
(I wrote dwww, though it's now maintained by Jim Pick.)

I believe that the ancient bug 6039
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=6039) against dselect
is fixed by the existence of the 'apt' backend to dselect, which
apparently does everything the submitter wanted it to. :-)
Could someone please confirm that this is fixed, and close the bug if it is?

It's still an intrinsic bug in dselect.
Aside from APT, IIRC there was a package called pkg-order that had code for
ordering, though it got removed at some point.
