Subject: pcmcia-source: cannot build working pcmcia-modules package
Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 21:27:17 -0700
Package: pcmcia-source
Version: 3.1.8-13
Severity: normal

[ This bug, if real, is important, However, there is room for a lot of
user error when building kernels, and I will be out of town for a week
starting Thursday and unable to answer questions, so normal seems like a
  safer priorty for now. ]

I upgraded to pcmcia-*-13 today, from version -10. With version -10, I had
built 2.2.14 and 2.2.15 pcmcia module packages to go with my kernel images.
All built the usual way with make-kpkg. All worked ok.

With pcmcia-source -13, I cannot build a kernel that can use pcmcia to
save my life. I've tried 6 times. I've tried kernel versions 2.2.14 and
2.2.15. I've made sure my build trees were completly clean, by rm -rf ing
them and unpacking the source again. I've made absolutly sure that I am
using the same .config file I used before, and that the kernel and modules
I build are being booted from and used.

The only change I can identify is the upgrade of pcmcia-source.

The exact problem is that once the kernel and modules are built, installed,
and I reboot, depmod finds unknown symbls in every pcmcia module. depmod
-ae lists symbols like printk, that I know are in my kernel.

It looks like pcmcia-modules don't work if the kernel is built with
CONFIG_MODVERSIONS on. Unfortunatly, I need CONFIG_MODVERSIONS, so this
doesn't help me. :-( It used to work..

Hmm ... I don't understand. I thought that this was fixed. At least,
these sources build for the kernel-image packages. Some of those
kernels use "CONFIG_MODVERSIONS" and some don't.

I don't know why you are having trouble. Can you send me more
information about how the build process is failing?

I have no problem building. But it is impossible to use the modules once
they are built.

Have you tried the latest version in unstable? It is important to know
whether this problem has been fixed upstream.

Well I've been working with David Hines trying to figure out what's
doing it. David says that the problem is that at some time during the
pcmcia modules build, an empty include/linux/modversions.h gets made.
Here's where:

.prereq.ok:
        KVERS="$(KVERS)" ./Configure -n --kernel="$(KSRC)" --srctree --cardbus
        touch include/linux/modversions.h

This shouldn't happen. According to David, an empty modversions.h forces
modversions support off. This is useful IFF you are building pcmcia modules
for the currently running kernel, which does not have modversions, and yet
for some reason /usr/src/linux is set up for modversions.

I'm not sure this case is ever going to be hit when someone is using
kernel-package. David says that the newer upstream Configure script for
pcmcia does the touch in exactly the right situations, not
unconditionally.

I think you must have added the touch within the past three debian revs,
as version -10 did work fine.

I've verified that commenting out this line fixes the bug and lets me
build working pcmcia modules again.

That's all fine and well, but removing this line has prevented me from
building packages to accompany the many kernel packages that we now
build for Debian.

In particular, I get the following errors:

----------------------------------------
  make[4]: Entering directory `/home/brian/src/debian/pcmcia-frozen/pcmcia-cs-3.1.8/modules'
  cc -MD -O3 -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -pipe -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -I../include -I/home/brian/src/debian/pcmcia-frozen/kernels/kernel-source-2.2.14-compact-2.2.14/include -c i82365.c

This is why I added the include/linux/modversions.h file. This problem
is not yet fixed.

I'd say talk to David Hines; he semes to have a newer Configure script
that only touches the file when it's needed.

Well, it's not as simple as simply putting the later Configure script into
the old sources. The PCMCIA software from frozen is seven versions and
half a year out of date!! (For me, the release cannot happen soon enough.
I am tired of maintaining old source code and backporting solutions that
have been solved months ago.) Furthermore, Debian's strict policy on what
goes into frozen (which I can summarize as "obsolete software only") will
not allow me to upload a newer upstream version which fixes many of this
stuff.

Nevertheless, I have patched the Configure script, and I think that I have
solved the problem. Since I have been warned of the release of a new set
of kernel packages, I shall release these changes in the pcmcia packages
to coincide with the new kernel packages.

Meanwhile, could you please test this version of the Configure script to
see whether it fixes your problem?

Thank you,
Brian

Great!

Unfortunatly, it's impossible, I catch a plane this morning. I'll be
back on the 11th.

Subject: Bug#64953: your new Configure script
Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2000 14:42:58 +0200 (CEST)
Dear Brian

Thanks for posting the updated Configure script, I have tried it and it
fixed the "unresolved symbols" problem for me.

For confirmation: I met apparently the same problem as Joey Hess:

kernel-source-2.2.15 1:2.2.15-2 (compile with modversions on)
  pcmcia-source 3.1.8-13

and depmod -a gave unresolved symbols in the resulting pcmcia modules.

I did try pcmcia-source 3.1.14-1 and the unresolved symbols went away, but
that one doesn't handle epochs in the kernel version.

Incidentally, I still have

depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.2.15/pcmcia/epic_cb.o
  depmod: epic100_probe

but as this doesn't affect me I haven't tried to figure out if it's a bug.

Best regards
Philip Tuckey

Thank you for the feedback. It's good to have confirmation that my
attempts at fixing something are working.

I'll upload a new set of packages soon. I'm waiting for the new set of
kernel-image packages to be uploaded, so that I can build the modules
against these new packages.

Someone else has reported this problem within the last month. I've
posted a question about this on the PCMCIA Message Forum.
