Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):

From: Mariusz Matuszek <mmatusze@eti.pg.gda.pl>
To: submit@bugs.debian.org
Subject: dpkg 1.4.0.5 will not upgrade itself.
Date: Wed, 5 Feb 1997 13:31:36 +0100 (MET)
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.4.0.5

* Problem description:

When I install Debian 1.2.5 (stable a.k.a. rex-fixed) using current base
disks set (dated 1997-01-18) the dpkg will fail to upgrade itself to
currently available 1.4.0.7 version during installation of the system.
This failure is probably the reason of the complete installation program
failure (dselect stops processing and lists a large number of packages as
not properly installed due to installation errors).

* Additional information:

- transcript of relevant error message follows:

Preparing to replace dpkg 1.4.0.5 (using .../base/dpkg-1.4.0.7.deb)...
/var/lib/dpkg/info/dpkg.perm: /usr/sbin/install-info: no such file or
directory
dpkg: warning - old pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: trying script from the new package instead...
/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/prerm: /usr/sbin/install-info: no such file or
directory
dpkg: error processing
/var/lib/dpkg/methods/mnt/debian/stable/binary-i386/base/dpkg-1.4.0.7.deb
(--install):
  subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1.

- other checks done:

from second console I checked that the file /usr/sbin/install-info
,lack of which seems to cause the failure, exists.

* Suggestion

I suggest that base disk set be modified to include the latest version of
dpkg (would have done it myself but I am still too new to Debian method of
packaging).

Please note that there are other reasons to update base set as well. For
example errors in displaying list of available network drivers during
modules configuration. Also the particular driver for 3COM 3c900 card I am
using seems to be available in more recent version (see pointers in
Hardware Compatibility and esp. links to VaResearch).

Hope this helps.
Thanks to all for their tremendous effort in making Dbian distribution.

Greetings, Mariusz.
