Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.4.0.8
The installation method "cdrom" fails to install/update the package list
when the CDROM is already mounted, before selecting the menu item. Perhaps
this behaviour could be changed. The method should check if a cdrom is
already mounted and use it instead of complaining.
Thanks,
Chris

The work around for this is to not choose "cdrom" when you have already
mounted it. You should, instead, choose "mounted file system", or whatever
the mounted method is called.

Well, this is one of the points that make dselect really "ugly".
If we stick to the way it's now, then I suggest renaming the method from
"cdrom" to "unmounted cdrom" :-)
No, I really suggest to add this little test.
Cheers,
Chris

Well, I wasn't suggesting that it "not" be fixed. It's definately a bug.
What I should point out is that it will react the same way if you are
trying to install off of a pre-mounted disk partition as well. Probably
the best fix would be to merge the two methods into one. If there is no
mounted device then ask which to mount. Better yet, show mounted and
unmounted partitions to choose from. If the chosen device is mounted use
it, if it is not mounted, mount it and use it.

Did you have a look at the experimental package "dpkg-mountable"? It does
exactly what you want. It works perfectly for me, but the screen messages
are "screwed up". This shouldn't be much work to fix, though.
Perhaps this could be included in some future version of dpkg and replace
the "mounted" and "cdrom" option.
Thanks,
Chris
