I think that #957 (dpkg should log everything) and #93435 (asking for
package changelogs inside dselect) are *not* the same bug - since they
are asking for quite different things.

#957 doesn't seem too unreasonable either (whereas I agree #93435
would be impossible to implement with the current deb format/mirror
structure).

 Jonathan.

I write a patch for dpkg to add a log file /var/log/dpkg for all
'install', 'remove' and 'purges' of packages.

Hello,

This functionnality would be really, really, really useful. This bug is
open since 1995, and in June 2004 someone gave a patch to implement the
requested functionnality. Is it possible to include this patch ?

Currently, in my Linux User Group (in France), we install many many
Debian systems for people. Sometimes, they come with a problem like "xxx
doesn't work anymore". Having a dpkg log would be really, really useful
to determine since when and why the problem appeared.

If necessary, I can implement the functionnality in recent versions of
dpkg. If you want me to do so, please give me the address of the
CVS/Subversion repository in which dpkg development occurs.

Thanks,

Thomas

I have already ask in debian-devel for including the simpel patch of
Michael, which works without any problems, but there are some people
which like to make it perfect... AFTER SARGE RELEASE ! :-(

Right, it could break many things...

This was already discussed recently, I've stated that the implementation
in this patch is not ideal and that post-sarge I will provide a log file
containing details of all the states that dpkg puts packages through.
