New Versioned Perl packages soon

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

The new versioned Perl packages have been uploaded to Incoming. I don't
know what the current backlog on Incoming is but they're be available on
my site now.

I've got the following apt line in my /etc/apt/sources.list on my test
machine.
deb http://www.daft.com/pub/debian/released ./

You can of course get the packages at that address or at
ftp://ftp.daft.com/pub/debian/released/*.

Note that the perl-5.004 packages will be installed for you
automatically. There are empty perl, perl-debug, and perl-suid packages
that can be removed whenever you like. You'll want to install
perl-5.004-doc as well. For most machines, there isn't an excuse not to
have the documentation.

There is also an empty perl-base package. This package is essential and
depends on perl5-base. Each versioned perl-5.\d+-base provides
perl5-base. This keeps Perl on the system at all times.

If you install the perl-5.005-base package, you'll conflict with perl.
This means that if you use apt-get, it will warn you that it's going to
remove scads of packages. If you don't want them removed, don't say
yes.

If you are building Perl packages, you'll need to build them with Perl
5.005 using the policy defined in /usr/doc/perl-5.\d+-doc/perl-policy*
You'll need to download perl-5.005 and use dpkg --force-conflicts to
install it if you still have older non-versioned packages installed.

If you're just build packages with some scripts in it, just depend on
perl5 rather than on perl. All the perl-5.\d+ packages provide this for
you.

I really, really have to thank Raphael Hertzog for all the help that
he's given me in getting this out. Without his help, I'd probably still
be working on it.
