It could be that you did not configure the kernel correctly when you ran
"make config". The same thing happened to me on my Rev. A iMac. Someone was
kind enough to send me their config script so that I could generate a
working kernel and I've included it below for you. Note: I'm not sure if
all the items included in this script are absolutely necessary for the
iMac, but it did allow me to get Debian working on my machine with X, gpm,
etc. all working correctly. I suggest following the script to the letter
for your first compilation and, then if you wish to refine your kernel, to
experiment with adding/removing options later.
Don't forget to copy System.map to /boot and to run "make modules" and
"make modules_install".

I've read on this list that there are problems with the current version of
apt and MD5Sum matching. I suggest using dselect, which should allow you to
get whatever packages you require.
