Mozilla は非常に速い周期で Firefox をリリースしています。リリースの周期は 6 週間から 8 週間であり、セキュリティ問題を修正されるのは最新版だけです。ほとんどのユーザにとってこれは不便です。このため、Mozilla は Firefox を 10 回リリースするごとにそのうちの 1 つを 延長サポート版 (ESR) に昇格させ、Firefox が 10 回リリースされるまでの期間 (1 年とちょっと) については ESR にもセキュリティ更新 (機能変更は含みません) を提供します。

Debian では両方のバージョンをパッケージにしています。ESR は firefox-esr パッケージに含まれ、これがデフォルトで使われます。なぜなら、Debian 安定版においてはサポート期間が長いほうがふさわしいからです (Debian 安定版のライフサイクル期間中に ESR がリリースされると、Debian はそれに応じて新しい firefox-esr パッケージを用意しなければいけませんが)。通常の Firefox は firefox パッケージに含まれますが、このパッケージは Debian 不安定版でのみ提供されています。

Stretch よりも前の Debian では Firefox と Thunderbird は提供されませんでした。その代わりに、Firefox に別名を付けただけで同等の機能を持つ Iceweasel が iceweasel パッケージで提供されていました。

Debian は Mozilla Foundation の定めた Firefox™ 登録商標の利用規則を満足できなかったため、名前を変更しました。すなわち、Firefox と名付けられたソフトウェアはどんなものでも公式の Firefox ロゴとアイコンを使わなければいけませんでした。しかしながら、Firefox ロゴとアイコンは自由なライセンスでリリースされていないため、Debian は Firefox を main セクションで配布できませんでした。パッケージのメンテナは、ブラウザ全体を non-free セクションに移動するのではなく、名前を変えることでこの問題を解決することにしました。

同様の理由で、Thunderbird™ 電子メールクライアントの名前も類似の Icedove に変更されました。

現在、件のロゴとアイコンはフリーソフトウェアライセンスで配布されており、Mozilla は Debian プロジェクトによる名前の変更が Mozilla の商標ライセンスを尊重した結果だったと認めました。このため Debian はもう一度 Mozilla のアプリケーションを公式名で提供することが可能になりました。

Netscape Navigator was the standard browser when the web started reaching the masses, but lost ground when Microsoft bundled Internet Explorer with Windows and signed contracts with computer manufacturers which forbade them from pre-installing Netscape Navigator. Faced with this failure, Netscape (the company) decided to “free” its source code, by releasing it under a free license, to give it a second life. This was the beginning of the Mozilla project. After many years of development, the results are more than satisfying: the Mozilla project brought forth an HTML rendering engine (called Gecko) that is among the most standard-compliant. This rendering engine is in particular used by the Mozilla Firefox browser, which is one of the major browsers.
