The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT), Angamaly, Kerala, India, was establised in the year 2002. The institution took an initiative to move towards free and Open Source software in the year 2008. The campus currently has a single sign on set up based on Debian Lenny and handling around 1800 users. The server is SUN Blade X-6250 and 1 TB storage. The Central computing facility have an exclusive Debian lab primary used for teaching advanced C and Java programming for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The primarily used software are NFS, OpenLDAP, Samba, OpenJDK and Emacs.

Debian was chosen for its 'free' nature and stability.
