If this continues, please enable debugging in the backend (edit
/etc/postgresql/postmaster.init and then run `/etc/init.d/postgresql restart')
and see if there is anything useful in the log.

Compiler error messages, please.

I don't have an Alpha, but if you can isolate the problem I will be able
to forward it upstream.

I tried to compile that one, but it failed. A complete typescript of
the compile attempt is included at the end of this message.

It appears to be a problem with the Debian building mechanism.

This is your problem; because of that, the upstream Makefile doesn't build
pgtksh and so the debian build fails when dh_movefiles tries to move it.

Well, it's not *really* running out of memory, it just thinks it is.
All I'm doing is a createuser, and there's 256MB of RAM here with no
per-process memory limit...

Ahh. I was seeing a bunch of Perl errors, and so was checking all
over to make sure I had all the Perl stuff, and didn't even notice the
Tcl :-(

Will try again...

Subject: Odd Alpha problem with Postgres
Date: 20 Mar 1999 12:05:15 -0600
Hello,

A few days ago I reported bug #34738; please take a look at it at
http://www.debian.org/Bugs/db/34/34738.html.

In short, here's what's happening:

erwin ~$ createuser jgoerzen
Connection to database 'template1' failed.
FATAL 1: palloc failure: memory exhausted

createuser: database access failed.

This was originally with 6.4.2-1. I have since compiled 6.4.2-6 and
have had the same problem. The maintainer is puzzled, and the
upstream developers don't have Alphas, so he asked me to ask here for
any ideas. So.... any ideas? :-)

This is running on an empty database (postgres just installed) and
there are not per-process or per-user RAM restrictions in place.

Thanks,
John

Does this problem still occur with 6.5?
