If it helps any... on Intel, pcmcia depends on the configuration of the
currently running kernel when compiling.  The binary versions on the Intel
architecture are built specifically for the kernel images included in the
Intel hamm distribution.  People who build a custom kernel (which probably
everyone should do, IMHO) need to compile pcmcia themselves, which is why
the source is included as a package.
