cd boot

I'm pretty new to Linux and Alpha, both, so don't get too harsh with me.
I'm trying to boot Debian 2.1 from the cd to avoid the need for floppies,
but immediately after the VFS is mounted (as read-only (?)) I get a
message that tells me it can't start up /dev/console. What is the process
(boot options, etc.) for booting from the cd? I've got an SX with
AlphaBIOS 5.66.
