I just copied the file /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf into my homedir as 
~/.mplayer.config and uncommented the last three lines as follows

# get a default OSD font from fontconfig
fontconfig = yes
font = "Sans"
subfont-text-scale = 3

and it all worked.
