You may be right but let me explain, hopefully in the interest to part of the
audience too. I am a chemist/biologist and my scope with the workstation is
to carry out mechanical and quantum mechanical calculations on molecules.
Which cannot be done at any useful level with a pc. Certainly I'll never have
the time to play enough with OS to acquire the skill needed by <unstable>
versions (although I have one of debian on my pc and I really never dropped
on it being unusable). Therefore, recourse to a friendly flavor of amd64 may
be the quickest and safer solution in my case.
However, the workstation is just to better exploit the time span granted by
nature. I mean that I can set up a calculation while waiting for dinner, or
look at the results just before going to sleep. In the institution there are
more restrictions: cpu shared with colleagues, teaching duties, telephone,
etc. But to perform heavy calculations the workstation will be nothing, I'll
need a mainframe.
Talking with a mainfraime requires to be fluent in the language. It is not
friendly and the time is pressing, colleagues want access to the console. My
fear is that by becoming used at friendly flavors of linux, one looses that
type of fluency. It is true that through the terminal window one can probably
perform from friendly flavors of linux the same as from debian, but when
pressed by time one can easily forget about terminal windows. You know that.
Anyway, I am strongly considering your very valuable suggestion because I can
not really estimate the efforts to spend to set up with debian. And I have to
decide quickly for not having to my side a mute beautiful workstation.
