Bug#141871: apache-ssl: apt-get wants to remove apache-ssl
I'm plagued by this problem as well, and I've even accidentally removed
apache-ssl a few times when I was very tired or a little drunk. :)
As a work-around, I recommend using the newest aptitude and taking advantage of
the "don't upgrade by default" feature. Once in aptitude press F10 to get to
the menu, then go to Options->Miscelaneous and uncheck Automatically upgrade
installed packages.
I'd demote this bug to "wishlist", but it _does_ need to be addressed, both in
apt and in the release methods.
