Storcenter ix-200

The Storcenter ix-200 (Iomega)
has debian under the hood.

# cat debian_version
5.0.2

I'm a newbie to arm and indeed debian.
I have ssh access to the device.
How can I modify the debian\iomega os,
to install apps or update from debian repos.
wget works,
an apt with bits missing:
# apt-get update
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (2 No such 
file or directory)
E: Unable to lock the list directory

First task getting a working apt+deps
