Bug#65013: boot-floppies

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 2.1r4

architecture: i386
model: Celeron 500 Mhz
memory: 64 MB
scsi: no SCSI adapter
cd-rom: Fedelia FCD-402
hd-drive: Maxtor 7345AT - size : 345MB
network card: Tulip chipset

I'm trying to install Debian on a previous Mandrake box. I can boot with
rescue disk-floppy smoothly, all my hardware is seen and bootstrap
starts. Problems begin when it comes to deal with the hard disk, the HD
is seen but not the dos and ext2 partitions that were written to it
before.
When i try the option "Mount a previously initialized partition"
dbootstrap tells me it can't find any linux partition on the disk. Same
happens when trying to mount a previously initialized swap partition.
Then, i re-wrote the partitions table using "Partitioning a hard disk".
Then : "Initialize a partition", ok
Then : "Check for bad blocks ?" yes, and the computer hangs ... or at
least reads the sectors very very slowly (100 sectors/hour). I
calculated it'd take 4 days to check the 345 megs HD.
I tried to initialize the partition without checking for bad-blocks,
that was ok, but then i've never been able to install any base system on
the disk.

I'm very confused since this IDE disk worked fine with Mandrake, it was
manufactured in 1994, so it's not that old. What must I do ?

Thank you.

Eric
