The issue is not a technical one, it's a license issue. We can't really ship or
install non-free firmware graphics with a free installer at the moment. If we just
add such a mechanism to debian-installer, we are overriding the strict separation
of free and non-free installer images that Debian has stuck to for years and I don'
think this is something that should be done without careful consideration.

Looking at the discussion on debian-devel, there are DDs that value this strict
separation and there are also certainly many users that expect a 100% DFSG-compliant
Debian release to be available.

So, I think for such a change to be officially backed by the project, there should
be a change in Debian Policy first which should be the result of an open discussion.

As a compromise, I think it would already be a step forward if the non-free images
were more visible on the Debian homepage so that users don't have to search for them
on the interwebs.
