  Once again I speak too soon...

  This is not quite as simple as I thought at first.  The main problem is
that I'll have to save the version you want to move to before running dpkg,
so I can tell whether it was successful or not.  Also, I think the best
UI is to have the user target a particular package version; this also nicely
supports downgrading in cases where it's useful and is something I've wanted
to do for a while but never got around to..
