If the mirrors are still using rsync and the disk structure permits, you
would be able to replace the symlink with a hardlink, wait until the
mirrors
have all updated (rsync knows about hardlinks), then break the hardlink.
This should result in almost no bandwidth usage, yet separate the files.
No, I've never tested this to see if it works...
