Bug#37999: [OLD PROPOSAL]: A pre-install required space checking mechanism for Debian packages

This bug report contains a proposal to modify dinstall and apt to be
able to calculate the amount of space needed by packages before they
are installed, so that apt can say "sorry, there isn't enough space
left to install package foo". Furthermore, this will be calculated
using du -S so that the space requirements are calculated per
directory.

All that is needed now are some patches to dinstall and apt to be able
to handle this ;-) (I presume that the Packages.du.bz2 file would be
generated on a weekly basis in unstable, a bit like the Contents
files.)

Any volunteers to write the code?

   Julian
