The Release Notes for potato are in dists/potato/main/upgrade-i386/
directory, actually, you should have read that document.

This is a known problem, it's documented in the Release Notes.

What exactly was the problem in your old /etc/modules? update-modules takes
care of files in /etc/modutils/ directory, and generates /etc/modules.conf
file.
