weird error in dpkg-genpackage

dpkg-gencontrol: failure: chown new files list file: Illegal seek

Anyone seen this before? It worked earlier today! :) I'm running
dpkg 1.4.0.8 .. all the assorted utils are 1.4.0.8 too.
