I'm not sure about extending this thread, but...

The four-block shapes can be called `tetrominoes'[1].  We could just
call them "Tetro" or "Tetrom" based on this.  Would this still be a
problem?  It predates the "Tetris" game just a bit.  (IANAL)

Maybe we whould just describe them as "tetromino games".  I've also
seen it called a "falling bricks game".
