I don't see that there is a big difference in speed whether I run samba
as a daemon or from inetd. It's certainly more efficient to run it from
inetd. Most of the delay in printing here comes from processing one format
of file into another - for example PostScript into the printer control
language.
I also note that as soon as I open a file server connection to a host, there's
a copy of smbd executing on that host, and subsequent instances of smbd will
start up that much faster.
