I believe this to be true.  I previously required a Tecra kernel on my
Dell XPi, but GRUB can boot bzImages on it.

BTW, I have a preliminary grub package ready.  TODO items:

  * determine what section it should be in  (it's base:extra right now)
  * write manpage for "grubinst"
  * make grubinst more useful
  * write a little script to install a new kernel into /boot and add it
    to the boot menu

The "orig" package is the one from the FTP site, and the "Linux"
patches are folded into the Debian .diff file.

It is in incoming on master.  It is intended for experimentation: it
doesn't have a postinstall script that installs it or anything like
that.  If you want to use it, and you have a typical installation
(boot off of first drive, lilo on linux partition), then you should
make an appropriate "/boot/grub/menu.lst" file and run:

   grubinst /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2
