There's two choices. The first is to use the `pon' and `poff'
scripts. For that you have to edit the `chat' script in "/etc/ppp",
and set up the right device for your modem in the configuration file
in there. RTFM, of course... /dev/ttyS0 = COM1, /dev/ttyS1 = COM2...
The other choice is to install `diald'. I like it best. If you have
upgraded to libc6, make sure you edit "/etc/nsswitch.conf" and remove
the `dns' from the `networks' line.
