More likely he crashed out of emacs or info (or anything that uses the
curses TI/TE sequences) and he's still sitting in the "alternate
page", which doesn't scroll.  He can use something like
'xterm*enabletite: false' in his x-resources to disable the alternate
page flipping feature, or he can just run info or less and exit them
*cleanly* to get back to the normal mode.  (maybe even something like
"tput te" will fix it?)

I've use 'XTerm*saveLines: 1000' since long before debian existed; it
certainly worked in 93r6, 1.3, and works in hamm right now.  Also,
I've never seen any bug reports in the debian tracking system about
behaviour like your message describes.
