    FWIW you can still scan with SANE even half-installed...  sort of.
While xscanimage is totally and hopelessly broken, scanimage still
functions.  Manually rename the /etc/sane.d/dll.conf.dpkg-new to
dll.conf and then man scanimage.  You'll have to do things from the
command line, and unless you really know your stuff you'll have to scan
at maximum page area, but it still might be faster than rebooting.  (You
can always crop afterwards).  
    Note that scanimage dumps the output to stdout so you'll want to
pipe to an appropriate file.
