Intent to package TYA (JIT compiler for JDK)

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hello Debian developers.

I am not yet a debian maintainer, but I would like to become one. As my
first package, I would like to package TYA. I am also talking with Philip
Hands about possibly taking over his mh/nmh packages.

TYA is a small (50 k or so) shared library which translates JVM bytecode on
the fly into x86 code. It can be used together with the "blackdown" JDK
ports. I am not sure if it will work together with Japhar, though (don't
think so).

The current JDK in the Debian distribution is a libc5-based one, although a
glibc-based JDK has been released, but this has not made it into Debian,
yet. I believe Stephan Zander is working on that (right?)

So I suppose I should build both a libc5 version for the current jdk
package, and a libc6 version for the new those people who have installed the
new jdk themselves, and in anticipation of a debian package of it.

TYA seems to be somewhat unstable, although I've been running hotjava,
javac, etc., without problems.

The TYA licence says that it is not free software, but copyrighted (huh?),
and that it is under GPL (huh??). A copy of the GPL is included with the
upstream package. So I assume the author (non-english) has a somewhat
weird concept of the word free. I guess it qualifies as DFSG free though,
because the GPL is included. It obviously needs to go into contrib because
of the dependency on some JDK version.

If there are no serious objections, I will start the
new-maintainer-application process.

Regards,

Ruud.
