Re: so what? Re: Debian development modem

This is going to ruffle a few feathers, but I have broad shoulders...

I very much support David's remarks about leadership. As a mere user cum
tester I was first bewildered and then amazed at the silence from the top
as developers squabbled amongst themselves and then started walking out
the door.

The leader's first and foremost task is to manage the team, _not_ the
distribution. Technical details re the distribution can be delegated to
someone with more time, but the leader's job is to _lead_ the team, to
give direction and to _make_ a decision even if it turns out to be less
than optimal. If he does a good job the team members will feel good just
to be part of the team.

My career has been as an airline pilot and I leave it to you to imagine
how things would go if, instead of having a Captain, each aircraft relied
on a consensus from the passengers each time a problem came up. I would
keep my feet firmly on the ground, thank you.

On a more personal note, I have been running hamm for a long time here and
am very happy with it. But if I were an outsider, waiting and waiting for
hamm to appear, I would have shifted camp months ago. If we could have
stopped the developers from using hamm before its release (yes, I know!) I
bet it would have been out the door last December.

So while we must keep our distribution technically sound we must not
forget our "customers", assuming that there any any still waiting.
