Qmail does two strange things in it's mail spool: it uses the file's
inode number as a unique identification, and it uses a FIFO to let
qmail-send know to check the queue. The latter requires a local file
system, and the former requires local Unix filesystem semantics.

It's very careful delivering to maildirs to work with NFS.
