support gif => non-free ?

AFAIK, problem with gifs is patent to LZW compession.
But gzip support unpacking of LZW-compressed files (*.Z).
And I read somewhere (don't remember where) that unpacking of LZW
is free, only creation not.  So program which only reads GIF's,
not create them, can be in main.
Please correct me if I wrong.
