The gcc file that ends in .deb is a pre-packaged binary for Linux systems.  So
it won't work on Solaris machines.

There is a version under works for Linux on the Sun machines.  it is fairly
stable and by many reports out performs Solaris on the same machines.

Gcc is so named because it is GNU CC.  GNU software is 100% free software. 
Free in the sense that it no money goes to the people who wrote it (unless you
send them a donation) and free in the sense that you can take the code and do
whatever you want with it.  Yes, that means source code is provided.

There is a version of gcc for the Solaris operating system.  Check out
www.gnu.org for more info.
